Back to School Spanish: Starting Grinds in September

September Is the Smartest Time to Start

The beginning of the school year is the ideal moment to start Spanish grinds. Whether your child is entering 5th year, 6th year, or any secondary school year, September offers the full academic year ahead to build skills, address weaknesses, and develop confidence.

Why September Matters

For 6th Year Students

September in 6th year is your child's last opportunity to start grinds with enough time to make a real difference. Students who begin in September have roughly:

  • 7 months before the oral exam in April
  • 9 months before the written papers in June
  • 4 months before the mock exams in January/February

This is enough time for significant improvement, provided work begins immediately and continues consistently.

For 5th Year Students

Starting in September of 5th year is the gold standard. Your child has nearly two full years before the Leaving Cert. This allows for:

  • Thorough grammar mastery without time pressure
  • Natural oral fluency development through regular speaking practice
  • Extensive vocabulary building across all exam themes
  • Strong mock exam performance that builds confidence for 6th year

For Junior Cert Students

Students beginning Junior Cert Spanish or finding the transition to secondary school Spanish challenging can also benefit from early support. Building strong foundations now prevents the problems that many students face later on.

Setting Goals for the Year

September is the time to set clear, measurable goals:

  • Target grade: What Leaving Cert or Junior Cert grade is your child aiming for?
  • Current level: Where do they honestly stand right now?
  • Specific weaknesses: What areas need the most attention?
  • Milestones: What should be achieved by Christmas, by mocks, by Easter?

A good tutor will help establish these goals during the first lesson and revisit them regularly.

Building a Weekly Routine

Consistency is everything. A regular weekly lesson creates structure and accountability:

  • One lesson per week is sufficient for most students in 5th year and early 6th year
  • Twice per week may be beneficial for students who need to catch up quickly
  • After-school or weekend slots fit around other commitments
  • Homework between sessions reinforces what was covered and keeps progress steady

What the First Term Covers

In the September-December term, a typical grinds programme focuses on:

  • Assessment of current level and gap identification
  • Grammar foundations: ensuring core tenses are solid
  • Vocabulary building for the main exam themes
  • Introduction to oral exam format and initial speaking practice
  • Mock exam preparation as January approaches

Do Not Wait Until January

Every year, there is a rush of students seeking grinds in January — after disappointing mock results. By then, time is limited and the pressure is high. Students who start in September arrive at mocks better prepared, achieve better results, and carry that confidence through to the final exams.
