It Is Not Too Late
If you are reading this with only weeks until your Spanish exam, do not panic. Last-minute revision is not ideal, but focused effort in the final weeks can still improve your grade meaningfully. The key is knowing where to direct your limited time.
The 4-Week Plan
Week 1: Oral Exam Blitz
If your oral exam is still ahead, this week is entirely dedicated to it. The oral is 40% of your mark — no other component offers this much return on your time.
- Refine your presentation: tighten the structure, add interesting details, practise transitions
- Prepare answers for the 15 most common follow-up questions
- Practise with someone — a tutor, a classmate, or even record yourself
- Work on filler phrases for when you need thinking time (bueno, pues, a ver, es decir)
Week 2: Grammar Essentials
You cannot master all grammar in a week, so focus on what appears most frequently:
- Present tense: Ensure regular and key irregular verbs are solid
- Preterite: The main past tense for narratives and descriptions of events
- Imperfect: For descriptions, habitual actions, and background information
- Future and conditional: Relatively straightforward tenses that add sophistication
- Key subjunctive triggers: Learn 5-6 phrases that require subjunctive and use them
Week 3: Vocabulary and Written Practice
- Learn 15-20 high-impact vocabulary words per day, grouped by exam themes
- Practise one full written paper section each day
- Memorise useful essay phrases and connectors
- Review comprehension technique: how to approach questions systematically
Week 4: Exam Technique and Timed Practice
- Do at least two full past papers under timed conditions
- Review your answers against marking schemes
- Identify recurring errors and drill those specific points
- Practise time management: allocate minutes per section and stick to them
Quick Wins for Immediate Improvement
These strategies can boost your mark with minimal study time:
- Learn discourse markers: Words like sin embargo, por lo tanto, ademas, en primer lugar instantly make your writing look more advanced
- Memorise set phrases: For opinions (en mi opinion, creo que, me parece que), for essay structure (para empezar, por otro lado, en conclusion)
- Perfect one essay template: A flexible structure that works across multiple topics
- Know the exam layout: Knowing exactly what each section expects saves time and reduces anxiety
Listening Exam Tips
The listening section catches many students off guard. In the final weeks:
- Listen to Spanish audio daily — even 10 minutes of podcasts helps
- Practise with past paper listening sections
- Read the questions before the recording plays
- Do not try to understand every word — focus on answering what is asked
The Night Before and Exam Day
- Do not cram the night before — light review only
- Get a proper sleep
- Eat breakfast and stay hydrated
- Read through your oral notes one final time in the morning
- Stay calm — you know more than you think you do
